Activities for Doctors

Capacity building is one of the major objectives of Children Cancer Foundation. The hospital is making all efforts to establish a proper medical education department for training of doctor and nurses in pediatric oncology. Significant progress has been made in this regard as evident by running of following courses and workshops.

6th Pediatric Oncology Intensive Course

Certified workshop for General Practioners and Pediatricians

A certified workshop for General Practioners and Pediatricians was held at CCH. Dr. Raffie Raza from NICH, Dr. Syed Ahmer Hamid from CCH and CEO CCH Dr. Shamvil Ashraf discussed the issues involving Childhood Cancer. See the images of the event here.

Pediatric Oncology Training Course for Pediatrician and Medical Officers at the Children Cancer Hospital

The CCH has been training doctors and nurses in pediatric oncology with the help of International Union against Cancer’s (UICC) My Child Matters grant. This third course for doctors was organized from June 6 to 13 in which as many as 12 pediatricians from the Civil Hospital, Karachi, (CHK), the National Institute of Child Health (NICH), Ziauddin University Hospital and the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission’s radiotherapy centres in Jamshoro and Nawabshah attended the training course. The course facilitators were Dr. Syed Ahmer Hamid, Dr. Raffie Raza and Dr. Fouzia Naz of the CCH.

The director of the NICH, Prof Jamal Raza, in his address, at the certificate distribution ceremony, urged the general pediatricians to regularly update their knowledge and expertise in diagnosing cancer and other complicated diseases among children. Prof Dr. Fahmina from the Pediatric Unit III, CHK, also spoke on the occasion and said that a child oncology unit at the CHK would soon be established.

CME for General Practitioner and Pediatricians

To make doctors more proficient in early detection a half day CME is planned every 3 months for General Practitioner and Pediatricians; The first CME was conducted on 16th July 2011 attended by 10 doctors. The 2nd CME was done on November 3, 2011 at the Seminar Hall Children Cancer Hospital. Pediatricians from Civil Hospital, Baqai, ASH, NICH and other major institutes attended along with the leading family physicians of the area.

Institutional Fellowship in Pediatric Oncology

Until recently pediatric oncology and hematology was not recognized as subspecialty by College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP). A three year structures training program of Pediatric Oncology fellowship with rotation in Aga Khan, Shaukat Khanum ,and Dr Ziauddin was started in 2007. Three candidates with Fellowship in Pediatric (FCPS) were enrolled who have successfully completed the fellowship and now working as Pediatric Oncologist.

Children Cancer Hospital Recognition for Fellowship in Pediatric Oncology and Hematology. The application is in process with CPSP.

One Week Case Based Learning Course In Paediatric Oncolgy

Children Cancer Foundation Pakistan Trust with the help of a grant from UICC (International Union Against Cancer) My Child Matters Program has started a training program for doctors treating childhood cancer.

The objectives of this project is to make doctors more proficient in early detection, diagnosis and treatment of pediatric cancer, to establish level 1 Pediatric oncology service at their respective centers and to develop shared care with Children Cancer Hospital

The target doctors are Pediatricians from Medical Colleges and doctors from oncology centers of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. This training program has two phases

  • Intensive course at Children Cancer Hospital to give core knowledge of Pediatric Oncology
  • Rotation at Children Cancer Hospital to provide hands on training

Half day workshop for General Practitioner and Pediatricians

Regular Monthly Educational Activities for Doctors

In collaboration with Aga Khan and NICH we have 5 regular activities every month including two Solid Tumor Boards, Leukemia/Lymphoma Tumor Board, Journa club and a Fellow talk. Two session are done at CCH and three at AKUH.
