World Cancer Day 2014

Internationally 4th of February has been designated as World Cancer Day. The prime objective of this day is to provide public awareness about cancer and its prevention, so as to achieve a reduction in deaths due to cancer. For 2014 the logo for World Cancer Day is ‘debunk the myths’ i.e. to eliminate/minimize the misconceptions and mis-perception about cancer.

The Children Cancer Hospital organized a public awareness campaign about Cancer and its prevention on 4th Feb 2014. This session was coupled with child friendly constructive play activities.

Dr. Zehra Fadoo (President-PSPO), Dr. Shamvil Ashraf (Pediatric Oncologist CEO-CCH) & Dr. Ahmer Hamid (Consultant Pediatric Oncologist-CCH) participated in this program and briefed the audience on the Cancer, its prevalence in children and prevention strategies.
As per WHO guidelines, following common measures can be adopted for cancer prevention on a wide scale:

  • Avoiding obesity and overweight
  • Healthy eating habits(consume fruits/vegetables)
  • Avoidance of tobacco smoking
  • Avoidance of alcohol
  • Hepatitis B & HPV Vaccination
  • Avoidance of pan , chalia and gutka (for prevention of oral cancer)

There were a number of fun activities planned for kids including games and music. The kids certainly had a great time that day.
